Beware DIY Air Con Top Up Kits
Industry sources have reacted with concern to the news that Halfords is selling canisters of refrigerant direct to the public. The company sees an attractive market opportunity with the DIY kits offering a much cheaper alternative to the average garage service at anywhere between £80 - £200. Some kits claim to repair small leaks with the inclusion of a sealant in the mix, on the 'Radweld' principle. The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Industry Board is taking the issue up directly with Halfords stressing the obvious environmental and safety implications and that they could be contravening the Environmental Protection Act. They stated, work on car ac systems should only be carried out by people trained in the handling of refrigerants. The move by Halfords serves to underline the need for a mandatory resistration scheme for refrigerant handling. Taken from RAC Magazine Nov 2005

The DIY kits cost between £25 to £50, they can only "top-up" a system. Topping up a system without knowing the current weight of refrigerant in the system is potentially dangerous. There will be a sticker in your engine bay giving the correct weight of refrigerant required, there is no way of knowing how much more you have added to the system with one of these kits. If you put too much refrigerant into your system you can severely damage any and all components in the system.

You wont find me using some idiot proof all singing all dancing recharge machine like some well known service garages.

I use set of specialised tools and equipment and my own experience and intuition to get your Air Con working as efficiently as I possibly can.

I will measure the temperature output of the system before the service and check the condition and correct operation of all the components in the system with an advanced diagnostics machine.

I will then check for leaks using bubble spray (£5 extra for UV treatment when done during service)

I will remove the gas from the system and check its condition for impurities, moisture and air content. I will re charge the system to the correct weight with filtered and dried gas, and check again for leaks.

I will then measure the temperature output once again and if I do not find a 10% drop I will offer you your money back for the service!* (see bellow for disclaimer)

I will then provide you with a full service report and a print out from the diagnostic machine.

I use state of the art electronic charging and diagnostic equipment to ensure that your system is serviced to the best possible standard.

If the system has been open to the atmosphere for more than 4 to 5 hours I would recommend that you change the receiver dryer or suction accumulator where fitted just before I re-charge the system.

*10% drop garuntee. Please note if the ambient temperature around the car is less than 14 degrees Celsius it may affect the results of the AirCon recharge test results.
    In these circumstances, it is at my discretion whether or not to offer a refund with results less than 10%.
    I will not give a refund if I belive that I cannot achive a 10% drop because of a mechanical or electrical fault with the system that I or another party has diagnosed. I will not offer a refund if the system is inoperable before of after the service. Extras will not be refunded. A £5 call out fee will still apply. I will not refund travelling costs.
